She has always been a rebel. That is how she caught my eye. I first saw her when she was beating up the bully on the playground. A slip of a girl giving a boy twice her size, a bloody lip and a black eye! “Who is she?” I wondered. She felt my eyes on her, turned around and asked me, “Are you his friend?” I hurriedly denied it not wanting to be at the receiving end of one of her famous right hooks! And that is the story of how we first met. As I got to know her over the years, I fell in love with her more and more! She was a born rebel. From choosing the so called ‘boy-dominated’ clubs in school (it didn’t help that she performed better than us!) to opting for becoming a mixed martial arts trainer as a career choice, she always chose the most unexpected path that would leave us flummoxed.
Surprisingly, it didn’t take long for us to get married. Unsurprisingly, it was because she decided to propose to me. However, pressure for her to start acting more like a wife and bahu, to settle down and have children was slowly getting to her and I came home one day to see her weeping uncontrollably. I told her that I loved her for who she was and wouldn’t want her to change an iota. Children could wait since we had already been using one of the best birth control pills in India, Unwanted 21 Days – oral contraceptive tablets. I didn’t want to start receiving complaint letters from school principals yet, I told her. And I got a right hook. Should have known by now, right? My rebel had cheered up.
