Women are the significant pillars of our society, contributing through their services in the households and the outside world. In such a scenario, we cannot afford to ignore the importance of women’s health. Though women-empowerment is on the rise, a major section is still deprived of even basic education rights. FEnfForcing them to marry early, to give up on their education and jobs to take care of the family, and childbearing at early ages are some of the challenges faced by every other woman, even in the 21st century.
A joint study conducted by AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), the Indian Statistical Institute, Prime Minister’s Economy Advisory Council, and Harvard University suggests that gender discrimination negatively affects women’s health in India. The study reveals that only 37% of women get access to healthcare compared to 67% of men. These statistics reflect the alarming state of women’s health in India.
Causes of Concern
Some of the major women’s health issues in India are:
-
Malnutrition:
Nutrition plays a vital role in an individual’s overall health and well-being. Shockingly, India has the highest number of malnourished women compared to other developing countries.
-
Maternal Health Issues:
Childbearing at early years and lack of proper maternal health care are other critical issues that need to be addressed. It is essential to make women aware of alternative contraception methods such as the Unwanted 21 Days, Regular Oral Contraceptive to help them embrace motherhood at the right time.
-
Mental Health and Other Issues:
Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression due to discrimination, domestic violence, etc., are other causes of concern in India. In many cases, it may even lead to suicidal tendencies. The suicide rate in India is higher for women as compared to men. Also, other health problems such as ovarian and breast cancers, AIDS, etc., are common in women, for which they fail to get the required treatment in many cases.
What Can We Do About It?
- More rigorous and frequent awareness programs must be conducted in rural as well as urban areas. The women should be made to feel more responsible towards their health.
- Special campaigns focusing on women’s reproductive health and methods of birth control are the need of the hour. Women should know how to exercise their right to choose motherhood when they are physically and mentally ready.
- Regular check-up camps can be organized to encourage women to keep a check on their health for problems specifically related to women of different ages.
Your Health is Your Responsibility
It’s time that every woman in India is aware of the health risks she is exposed to and feels responsible for it. They must be vigilant of possible health issues and learn to prioritize themselves when it comes to their well-being.
